This historical novel begins in 1753, in the Ohio Valley, with 2 men going to the rescue at the sound of a high voice crying out. A boy is lashed to a tree, and a native with a tomahawk is threatening him. The rescuers are scout Christopher Gist and one George Washington of Virginia. The native, with a French accent, retreats.
