Germany.. No date. 1735- 1745.. Engraving with mezzotint, printed in color with additional handcolor, image size 12 x 7 1/2 inches on sheet 16 x 9 1/2 inches. Fine condition. Four ferns, plate No. 510 from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann " Phytanthoza Iconographia ", printed on thick laid paper. Dunthorne (#327) notes that plates from this work represent "some of the earliest examples of color printing from a single plate", many of them printed by a combination of line engraving and mezzotint. The initial S at lower right indicates the artist engraver Abraham Seutter (ca. 1690-1747). .
