Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870), Scottish obstetrician, originated the use of ether in childbirth, and discovered the properties of chloroform (1847). He championed chloroforms’s use against religious and medical opposition until its use at the birth of Prince Leopold led to its general acceptance.
