N.Y.: International Book Company, 1889 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Popular Edition. 5 x 7 1/2 Inches. Original brick cloth on boards with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Top back corner rubbed. It is believed that this is a pirated copy which came out before the UK edition in 1890. When the prosperous Girdlestone firm skids toward bankruptcy, the father cooks up a scheme. He announces a new discovery of diamonds in the Urals, and then buys as many as he can from suppliers who believe the hoax and are willing to cut their their losses by selling. However, an authentic new discovery deflates the Girdlestone loot, and he thinks up another scheme, this time to get his hands on a young woman's inheritance. If only his son were a better lover...381 pp..
