London: George Newnes, 1901. First Impression. Decorative Cloth. Fine. First Edition, First Issue (black coated end papers) of the final and perhaps most complex of Wells's early scientific romances, a "classic of interplanetary fiction." (Locke) Crown 8vo (191 x 123mm): viii,342pp, with frontispiece and 12 further full-page plates by Claude Shepperson inserted. Publisher's dark blue decorative cloth, upper cover and spine stamped in gilt (first and primary binding, of four; later issues were bound in light blue cloth lettered in black). An unusually bright copy of one of the most difficult of Wells's science fiction titles to find in collectible condition. Bibliotheca Bibliographici 4130. Wells Society, p. 6. Wells 18. Hammond B7. Currey, p. 518-19. Locke I, p. 226. Originally published serially in The Strand Magazine (from December, 1900, through August, 1901), then in book form in New York, one month before this London edition. Inspired by Jules Verne's Journey to the Moon, and the first of Wells's works to be filmed (in 1919 by Gaumont). Unlike Verne, Wells had all scientific aspects of his lunar voyage vetted for plausibility by experts. "These early 'scientific romances' remain unsurpassed for their imagination and visionary power. Where Wells's contemporaries saw him as adding the scientific imagination to nineteenth-century romance, the twentieth century regarded him as the greatest of the forerunners of modern science fiction. His tales of future evolution, alien intelligence, interplanetary warfare and technological dystopia anticipated most of science fiction's thematic repertoire." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine Editions Ltd is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association, and we subscribe to its codes of ethics.).
