NY: Doubleday, Page, 1903. First American edition. Green pictorial cloth, designed in black, lettered in gilt. Title page printed in black & red. Light shelf wear to tips, a bright and attractive copy, about fine. Inscribed from H. Morse Stephens to Dunning Rideout: "For Dunning Rideout / In memory of many happy days, / some spent with Kipling, at / Marysville, / From / H. Morse Stephens / 16 November 1903". Stephens was the founder of The Kipling Club, and was a historian and professor at the University of California. Dunning Rideout was a financier and capitalist, mayor of Marysville, California in the 1870s, later a prominent figure in the Republican Party. A nice association copy, and in unusually nice condition.
