About This Item

New York: Scribner’s, 1948. First Edition. Signed by the author Charles A. Lindbergh to educational philosopher Robert Hutchinson the printed half-title page: “To Bob Hutchins, with great admiration and best wishes from his friend, Charles A. Lindbergh, August 1948”. With annotations to the text by Hutchins. About fine copy with some very minor handling in a very good dust jacket with a bit of edge wear and a few small chips and tears. Robert Maynard Hutchins (1899 - 1977) was president and chancellor of the University of Chicago from 1945 - 1951, and earlier dean of Yale Law School from 1927 - 1929 where he became known for the development of the philosophy of Legal Realism. After leaving his position at the UNiversity of Chicago, he became the head of the Ford Foundation and in 1959 he founded the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, a think tank in Santa Barbara, CA. Another significant element of his legacy is serving as Editor in Chief of the Great Books of the Western World and Gateway to the Great Books, and as Chairman of the Board of Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica from 1943 - 1974, as well as publishing extensively under his own name.
