First edition. Jakeman and Carver for the Woolhope Naturalists Field Club. Hereford. [1889]. Octavo. xxxvii, 549pp. Folding map, coloured in outline. Two lithos plates on heavier paper, one further figurative textual plate Epipactis ovalis from Little Doward. Original green blind stamped cloth, gilt to both upper and lower boards and spine. Worn, with discolouration to spine and upper board. First signature loose, repaired at hinge. Rubbed to corners and spine edges. Occasional foxing/spotting.

Rev. William Henry Purchas (1822-1903)
Cleric and botanist, born in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, the son of wine merchant Thomas Purchas of Ross. He married Frances Williams of Aberbran, Breconshire in 1859.
Founding member of Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club.
Rev. Augustin Ley (1842-1911)
Born in Hereford 3 April 1842, the son of the Rev. William Ley, vicar of Sellack, near Ross, combined with the parish of Kings Capel. He collected extensively in Herefordshire and along the Welsh Borders for many years. He was very knowledgeable on Bryophytes. He was a member of Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club.
This work was commenced in 1852, taking over three decades to complete.

Hannah Edith Purchas (1842-1921) of Chase Dale, Ross on Wye. Nee Jennings, wife of Alfred John Purchas (1835-1901) and sister in law of William Henry Purchas.
