No date. Ca. 1600.. Two woodcuts (each approximately 5 x 3 inches), hand colored, on single sheet 8 1/2 x 14 inches, single woodcut and text on verso. Dampstain to lower edge, a few short edge tears, overall very good condition. Beautifully designed and executed wood cuts of two sunflower varieties, showing flowers, leaves, seeds. Coloring appears to be early hand color, simple and carefully done. Page 262 from an unidentified old German language (fraktur) herbal, possibly Mattioli’s "Kreuterbuch ...." (Jacob Fischer, Frankfurt am Main, 1611) a German version of his "Pedacii Dioscoridis de materia medica libri sex" first published in Venice 1558. Single wood cut of Anisum (anise) on verso. .
