The third Hornblower novel published, and the eighth in series chronology, published together with the second. Along with "The Happy Return," the three form the basis for the 1951 film "Captain Horatio Hornblower," directed by Raoul Walsh, and starring Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo.

Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. Slight lean, with light foxing to the page edges. Jacket spine lightly toned, with chipping to the crown and light soil overall.

Green textured cloth with silver lettering to spine and front or top board. True first. Separate publication without Ship of the Line followed shortly later. London: Michael Joseph Ltd.. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. (1938). First Edition. Hardcover. TRUE FIRST EDITION, issued the day before publication in a single volume. Green cloth, lettered in silver. Two complete novels in the Horatio Hornblower series. SIGNED BY FORESTER on a Book Society "Flying Colours" bookplate which is mounted to the front pastedown. The book has a bump to the upper spine end. There is some light mottling to the front cover, at the upper front and also some to the rear. Light stains to the upper page edges and another to the fore edge, at the rear. Very tight. The dust jacket has chipping at the spine ends and corners. There are also some chips to the rear fore edge flap fold. Darkening to the spine. Also a small watermark to the title area on the spine. To the lower, front flap there is the correct price of 8/6 along with the statement, "NOT FOR GENERAL SALE". ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 304,284 pages; Signed by Author .
