About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.[A genuine UK first edition/first printing, with the full number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 on the copyright page.]VG/VG.No owner inscrptn,no price-clip to dw/dj - but half-title page has been neatly removed (probably because of previous owner's inscrptn/name and could withstand sympathetic repair and restoration?).Book would've been graded as FINE but for this fault/defect,so honestly described as VG! Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj,with b/w lettering; with some minimal shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - majority of creasing along top edges of dw/dj.Top rear corner minisculely rubbed and some minimal, superficial scoring/indentations.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - possibly unread? Bright, crisp, clean, publisher's sharp-cornered,original, dark blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate dark blue endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,3-422pp [paginated] includes 3 sections/parts comprising 22 chapters; plus [unpaginated] title page,
acknowledgements, poetry extract (in French) by Henri de Regnier,sections/parts separator pages and 2pp blanks at rear.
Internationally acclaimed author's elusive 2nd novel, following his highly praised debut novel 'The Swimming-Pool Library'.'The Folding Star' was shortlisted for the Booker Prize that year, many expecting it to win,but it didn't.However his next novel 'Line of Beauty' did win the same prize in 2004.
Edward Manners - thirty-three,disaffected,in search of a new life - has come to an ancient Flemish city to teach English.Almost at once he falls in love with one of his pupils, the seventeen-year- old Luc Altidore, recently expelled from school for some mysterious offence.
Condemmed to a mounting but incommunicable obsession with the boy,Edward becomes involved in affairs with two other men: one a heartless but seductive fraud, the other a young drifter with a deeply possessive streak.
Then Edward is introduced to the world of the enigmatic and reclusive Symbolist painter Edgard Orst.
Gradually he is drawn towards an understanding of the artist's own obsession with a famous actress, drowned off Ostend at the turn of the century, and of the ambiguous circumstances of Orst's own death under Nazi Occupation.
