New York: Greenberg: Publisher, 1947. First American Edition. Hardcover. First American and first English-language edition of this somewhat uncommon concentration-camp memoir. Wiechert, a prominent and prolific German novelist, was arrested in 1938 and spent four months in Buchenwald for his vocal opposition to the Nazi régime. This memoir, first published in Munich in 1945, was one of the earliest exposés of the atrocities of the German concentration-camp system. A UK edition appeared the same year, but as the translator Ursula Stechow was a German exile living in the U.S., we make the reasonable assumption that the American edition has priority. First printing. Octavo (21cm). Blue cloth boards; dustjacket; 135pp. Tight, Near Fine copy in a slightly creased and edgeworn jacket with smal nick at base of spine; Very Good.
