Description:
Oxford: Printed at The University Press by John Collingwood & Co 1841 4to unpaginated, 1841 VG+ to Near Fine copy of the large 4to edition, bound in original full burgundy leather, with intricate gilt tooling to front & rear covers & spine, raised bands, all edges gilt. There is slight rubbing to the covers, and the edges are somewhat scuffed, otherwise the binding is in excellent condition. The bookplate of Edgar & Helen Corrie, dated 27th Nov. 1843, is affixed to the front pastedown, and is very attractive in its own right, having hand-stamped gilt lettering & intricate gilt border on a purple background. Internally, apart from some very mild foxing to the prelims, the book is Very Fine throughout, printed in large letter double-column, and appears to be completely unread, with the look and lustre of a brand new book. Obviously, this book has been lovingly cared for by its previous owners throughout the past 150 years, and it is now looking for a new loving home.

[ London]: Printed for the Society; and Sold by Chr. Henderson ... London; and by John Sibbald, Bookseller, in Liverpool, 1763. [4],96,[20];[2],165,[7]pp. Octavo. Old calf, rebacked and recornered, gilt label, contemporary/original marbled endsheets, a.e.g. Engraved bookplate ("Robert Nicholson Liverpool"), ownership signature of same, and descendant's 1864 gift inscription, some modest foxing, marginal smudges to terminal leaves, old bookseller's description affixed to pastedown, and later bookseller's collation statement (in ball point pen!!!) on rear endsheet; a good, sound copy, with interesting provenance. First edition, octavo format, of this Book of Prayer edited by Seddon, in collaboration with Philip Holland and Richard Godwin, for use by the congregation of dissenters assembled at the Octagon Chapel, in Liverpool. The selection of Psalms has a separate title-leaf, register and index. ESTC locates ten copies in North America, and notes that the same setting of type was utilized for copies in quarto format. The original owner, Robert Nicholson (1727-1779), was a principal of one of the most prominent merchant families in Liverpool of the 18th and 19th centuries; coincidentally, Dorothy Nicholson (1741-1785) became the wife of the Rev. Nicholas Clayton, D.D. (1730-1797), minister of the Octagon Chapel. The later gift inscription is from Robert Nicholson's namesake and grandson, to Albert Nicholson. ESTC T148092.

1682 Bible Catechism Whole Duty of Man Richard Allestree Anglican England RARE'The Whole Duty of Man' is a Protestant devotional work written by Richard Allestree who prescribes various devotional exercises for a healthy Christian life. According to Bickersteth,
"'The Whole Duty of Man' was a practical book to counteract the Antinomians and contains an impressive introduction on the care of the soul, the devotional part is full and useful, and it has a good statement of relative duties, but it does not exhibit prominently the only principles and strength on which man can perform them." (Lowndes 1229)
This 1682 catechism was written as a commentary on Allestree's 'Duty of Man', designed to clarify and simplify his devotional exercises.

Tan leather heavily embossed with fruit, leaves and grain with the title on the front board and the spine. A personal Bible of outstanding artistry Beautifully bound and tooled editionThe Bible is a collection of religious texts, writings, or scriptures sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, Rastafari, and many other faiths. It appears in the form of an anthology, a compilation of texts of a variety of forms that are all linked by the belief that they are collectively revelations of God. These texts include theologically-focused historical accounts, hymns, prayers, proverbs, parables, didactic letters, admonitions, essays, poetry, and prophecies. Believers also generally consider the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration. Those books that are included in the Bible by a tradition or group are called canonical, indicating that the tradition/group views the collection as the true representation of God's word and will. A number of biblical canons have evolved, with overlapping and… Read More

Joseph Sharpless, No. 4, Franklin-Court, (Market-Street, Between 3rd. and 4th Streets, South Side, Philadelphia, 1813; First American Edition; 223 pages; original leather boards; red morocco title label. Noteworthy Bible History instructional, adapted for the understanding of everyday people and the young. First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. His grandson, Baker Peter Smith, in an 1852 memoir of Sellon reports that he (Sellon) was facetiously referred to by his colleagues as "silver-tongued Sellon" for his ability to bring his hearers to such heights of enthusiasm with his oratory that donations poured in.…
