London: Faber & Faber Ltd, 1946. 1st Edition. Hardcover. London: Faber & Faber Ltd, 1946. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Crowley's Personal Copy. Sm. 8vo., 200pp. A very good copy showing light use. First Edition. Pale blue boards, gilt titled at the spine [mildly faded, the gilt still bright]. Louis Marlow, [Crowley's Literary Executor] satirist, whose criticism of life cuts deep. "This is a book with ingredients both sweet and astringent, written by a man who has thought deeply, acted independently, reflected sagely, and is able to set down in bold, lucid, vivid paragraphs a life-time of rich and impassioned experience." & according to the author, the essays in this book have something to offend everyone. Presentation copy with a lengthy inscription by the author on the half title: "For / Aleister Crowley - With apologies for / the very imperfect / sketch of him / herein attempted. / From / Louis Marlow / And now in April 1946. Deirdre MacAlpine / April 1948". Also - Boldly signed by Crowley on the front pastedown with his phallic signature form, adding four lines of original poetry - "On Louis the immortals / sardonically look / he sought fame as a poet / and found it as a cook!". Penciled notes on the ffe: " Lidoll [sic] Hart / The Revolution in Warfare", & on the verso of the half title: "I want to ask Joad what's his answer to the very serious attack on his integrity on page 98 of this book" Some AC marginalia - one or two author's holographic corrections. With: a very good 2 page als on Crowley's personal stationery with his red 666 seal at the top. Dated September 25, Netherwood, The Ridge, Hastings. "Dear Louis / Peccavi / Mea Maxima Culpa / I ought to be kicked 77 times around circular Route No 2. Ungrateful swine that I am; a hog, a viper. Well, you know, I'm not really though it looks like it". Good content follows - signed: "Thine in sackcloth & ashes / Aleister

Los Angeles: Echelon Book Publishers, Inc, 1967. 1st edition. Soft cover. Fine/No Jacket (as issued). Near Fine. Mass market paperback, 192pp, printed wrappers. An uncommonly fresh copy of this rare and bizarre exploitation paperback biography of Crowley, written by the enigmatic "James Harvey" in an exceedingly florid, quasi-literate style ("A Victorian sex-demon who believed in perversity as a dahlia trusts the sun"). Minor rubbing to covers, but tight and exceedingly well preserved for a work of this character (nicest copy I have ever seen).

Description:
A beautiful copy of this rare item, and in unusually excellent condition. This is the one-volume first UK edition published by New English Library in 1975 in London. All aspects are first rate (see photos ). The slipcase is often missing or damaged, but here it is excellent: just the vaguest sense of rubbing and slight sunning fade to spine, but totally tight, clean and intact. Book itself: pages are crisp, clean and bright: no markings, tanning or inscriptions, almost as new. DJ is complete and excellent with just the slightest edge wearing and possibly a little sunning on spine. Overall, this is a tremendous version of this rare copy, it has obviously been well looked after since day one. **this item may require an additional POSTAGE charge (at cost) depending on your location as it is a heavy item: if so, I will be clear to you before I send. Please see all photos of this lovely book, more available on request Many Thanks

binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. This US Stackpole Edition omits 8 plates which are in the UK Allen & Unwin volume. Well-preserved, excellent copy.Inv. # 63672 NOAB* bds 9/2023
