May 1934 complete issue of magazine, profusely illustrated in color and black and white, 216pp, 14 x 11 inches, color pictorial paper wrappers as issued. With insert advertisement for Key Homes and General Electric Company. Cover of spine worn away so that glue and threads are visible; front cover and first thirty pages detached from spine approx 3 1/2 inches down from head. Otherwise very good condition. Many interesting articles in this beautiful publication with striking lithographic cover, plus elegant color and black and white advertisements. Articles include U.S. Aviation and the Air Mail(with two page "United States Air Mail" map), "Boulder Dam in Color. A Portfolio of Watercolors" by Stanley Wood (a Public Works of Art Project) with small diagram of the dam by Richard Edes Harrison; Chicago Tribune (with single page color map "Tribune Town" by George Annand). Rockwell Kent ad for Commercial National Bank, great black and white Chessie ad of Chessie in the bed of a rather large elderly gentleman who is complaining to the porter, smart Lincoln LeBaron Convertible Roadster ad, La Corona ad with "Tobacco Map of Cuba", and, for Northwest readers, an interesting half page ad announcing the availability for sale of Rosario, a 1339 acre private estate in the Pacific Northwest Historic San Juan Islands. Great cover of an airplane engine by Carpenter. Founded by Henry Luce (who had, with partner Briton Hadden, founded Time magazine in 1923), Luce declared of Fortune magazine that "American business has importance - even majesty - so the magazine in which we are able to interpret it will look and feel important - even majestic." .
