September 1939 complete issue of magazine, profusely illustrated in color and black and white, 152pp, 14 x 11 1/2 inches, color pictorial paper wrappers as issued. Worn covers with rubbing to spine and front, toned edges, small abrasions and bumped corners on front cover, 1 inch split to tail of spine, Seattle library stamp near front upper right margin. Interior in very good condition. Many interesting articles in this beautiful publication, plus elegant color and black and white advertisements. Articles include "the Vatican" with full page color illustrations, "Cure by Chemicals" about chemotherapy, article on PGE with black and white full page map of central California The Land of P.G.& E. by Richard Edes Harrison, "Phonograph Records". There is an advertisement for Bakelite products. Cover illustration by Herbert Bayer. Founded by Henry Luce (who had, with partner Briton Hadden, founded Time magazine in 1923), Luce declared of Fortune magazine that "American business has importance - even majesty - so the magazine in which we are able to interpret it will look and feel important - even majestic." .
