About This Item

Foundation - Isaac Asimov (Gnome Press First Edition / Second Printing 1951 Hardcover w/ Dust Jacket)

Copyright 1951, published by Gnome Press (NY); stated 'First Edition' on the copyright page. Second state / second printing per the advertising on the rear flap and oversized list of Gnome books on back of the dust jacket. Dust jacket has $2.75 on the front inside flap, lists other Science Fiction books by the publisher on the rear, and advertises 'Foundation and Empire' and 'Second Foundation' on the rear inside flap. Jacket has significant tears, chips, and nicks along the corners and spine head and tail. It is worn along the rear, the hinges, and over the 'A' in Asimov on the front, which is also wavy (based on viewing from the back) from what appears to be a ring water mark from a glass. Navy blue hardcover has significant spine lean and is worn at the corner, spine head and tail, and bottom-edge. Small nick on the fore-edge of page 239, while page 158 has a small hole the size of the head of a pin. All pages have varying degrees of tanning. Previous owner's name and date on the front free endpaper; no other writing or markings. Overall, it is in Good condition.

One of the great masterworks of science fiction, the Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are unsurpassed for their unique blend of nonstop action, daring ideas, and extensive world-building. The story of our future begins with the history of Foundation and its greatest psychohistorian: Hari Seldon. For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. Only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future--a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save mankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire--both scientists and scholars--and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the Galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation. But soon the fledgling Foundation finds itself at the mercy of corrupt warlords rising in the wake of the receding Empire. And mankind's last best hope is faced with an agonizing choice: submit to the barbarians and live as slaves--or take a stand for freedom and risk total destruction. From the Hardcover edition.
