Four Past Midnight

by Stephen King

Condition: Near Fine/Near Fine

(New York): Viking, (1990). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 763 pages. A collection of four novellas. The first, The Langoliers, became the basis of a TV miniseries. The book won the Bram Stoker award for best collection in 1990. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Bumping to top of spine. An astounding copy, with a full-page inscription. For contrast, copies of books inscribed to King's first agent and early editors rarely went beyond a few lines. This inscription reads, 'For Steve, Deborah, and the Gould Juniors...: Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed the piece on Williams hitting .406. The review was also good, but I could feel you wanting to let loose on that prissy S.O.B. George Will. You should have done it! See you soon, I hope--it certainly looks like there's a lot more baseball ahead for us this year. Hooray! Tabby & Owen send their best, and so do I. Stephen King. 9/5/90.' Almost certainly this was one of King's contributor copies, which he signed and sent to Gould (the book was published on September 3, 1990). As best your humble cataloguer can tell, the reference to George Will is to his book, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, which Gould reviewed in the Oct. 11, 1990 issue of The New York Review of Books, which means that Gould sent King a copy of the review in advance of its publication. The reference to Williams is to Gould's essay, 'Achieving the Impossible Dream: Ted Williams and .406.' Gould and King were friends and baseball fans--a relationship that appeared in their books (see the acknowledgements of King's The Tommyknockers and Gould's Wonderful Life). It's hard to imagine a better copy of this book.
