London, England: Tylston and Edwards, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Limited to 500 copies. Edited with an introduction and bibliography by Charles G. Thomas. Blood red linen, with armorial in gilt on front board. 4 page ad in rear for the Memorial Edition of the Works of Sir Richard F. Burton, just coming out, with reviews. Ex-Library. In obtrusive library stamp on endpapers. Call numbers blacked out on spine. Chips at head and heel, else good minus, in sound binding. Still a handsome copy. The King's escape is a saga that he loved, later to retell. During his escape and in various dis/guises, Charles was put on intimate terms with people with whom he would normally have had no interaction, such as country matrons, simple yeomen, servants and merchants. The help of the common people seems to have given him a sense that he was genuinely loved, something he would rarely have experienced amid the cynical flattery of court. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
