Lovely color stipple engraving of a Bigarreau cherry branch and fruit from the 'Traite des Arbres Fruitiers' commonly considered to be the finest work on fruit ever printed. Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1766 - 1854) was a French botanist, gardener and botanical artist. In 1835, with Pierre Jean François Turpin, Poiteau published a new edition of the Traite des arbres fruitiers (Treatise of the fruit trees) by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau. The publication history of this work is difficult to determine though it would appear to have been published between 1808-1813 and then discontinued. It also seemed to have later assumed the name 'Flora Parisiensis'. This copy includes the half-title page, title page [Flore Parisienne] followed by 32 pages of text and 44 leaves of fine uncoloured stipple-engraved plates. This copy includes the original information slip which states "Les neuf premiers Livraisons renfermeront Les Nos 1-5, 7-10, 13,15, 17-20, 22-26, 28-32, 34, 35, 37-41, 45-53, 59, 61, 68 des Planches. Les Nos. 6,11,12,16, 21 formeront la dixieme Livraison. Les Nos. 27, 33, 36, 42, 43 la onzieme. Les Nos. 44 54, 55, 56, 57 la douzieme." translated thus.
