Other than one note written on the top of a page in the Introduction, the text is clean and unmarked in a square and tight binding. Previous owner's name is on the top of the inside front binding and on the outer edges of the text block. Several notes are written on the front free end paper. Foxing is present on the front and back free end papers. Binding has little wear but has several faded spots. "The main theme of this book is France's place in the world, and all the political controversies and discussions that have, directly or indirectly, been connected with this question. I have avoided detailed economic discussions, but since a country's weight in the world is largely determined by economic factors, and since its weight also largely determines its place, I have delt with questions like the standard of living, wages, and social conditions in so far as they appeared relevant to the main subject of the book." pp. xxvii-xxviii.
