Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings, the Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation. by Joel Chandler Harris, with Illustrations by Frederick S Church and James H Moser. New York: D Appleton and Company, 1 3 and 5 Bond Street. 1882 Early Edition. This is a very early edition of Harris' first book. The charm and joy of these traditional African American songs creates a folk lore history to be studied and enjoyed by old and young. Joel Chandler Harris used a dialect spoken by unschooled southern black slaves in the 19th century, which can be controversial among some readers. Historically, his stories, sayings, and characters remain of interest.Condition: Condition of this all-original early edition of this folklore classic is very good. The brown cloth-covered boards with the impressed and gilt spine and patterned end pages are still sound. Only slight wear, with no crayon, writing, crimps or stamps found within. This is NOT a library book! Please review photos and ask for more if necessary to make your best… Read More

Near fine. 50 pages. 23.5 x 16 cm. 8 black and white full-page illustrations, decorative page borders. A smoking-themed parody spurred undoubtedly in part by the proliferation of fine press and arts and crafts editions of the Rubaiyat. The editor here concludes the burning need was not more translators, but for more Omars to translate, thus the son of Omar lying undiscovered in the wilds of Borneo sings the praises of tobacco over alcohol. Unobtrusive owner name on cover.
