1893 pamphlet in fair to good condition. Second edition. 40 pages. Wraps are worn and partially separated at spine, stab through top left corner not affecting text. Interior is toned but there is no writing, tears, folds or vandalism. A rare ephemeral item. The first edition was 1892 and WorldCat shows a single copy at Yale. This second edition is located by WorldCat in 3 libraries. I found none for sale and none sold at auction. The author is arguing for a Silver Standard instead of a Gold Standard. I am not an expert on this but a search of "Free Coinage of Silver" turns up a number of similar arguments in the late 19th century. See "Coinage Act of 1873," "Free Silver" and "Panic of 1893." Please see images of the item you will receive.

Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Description:
1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Notes: This title may be found in the libraries of Thomas Jefferson & Benjamin Franklin. More Notes: This is how most books came from the printer and it was up to the buyer to decide on further binding. This appears to have never been bound.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

No interior writing or vandalism. Pages are bright. Wraps are attached but delicate especially in front. Paginates: wraps, (1)-32. Somewhat uncommon pamphlet. WorldCat locates approximately 20 physical copies. See OCLC: 166586224 and 2599901. See McDade (Annals of Murder) 6. This pamphlet has two laid in adverts for another pamphlet "Life, trial, and confession of Sawtell" (AKA: Trial of Isaac Sawtell; AKA: History of the Murder of Hiram Sawtell by his brother Isaac Sawtell. McDade 852.) The laid in ads are the most ephemeral of ephemera. A collectible item in like condition. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Although author and date are not present one may make an educated guess. Murder was committed November, 1891 with trial shortly thereafter. Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
