About This Item

London: Michael Joseph. 1960. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Original green cloth with red illustration to the upper board and titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding square with light rubbing to the extremities. The contents are entirely complete, clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The text block edge is somewhat tanned. Complete with the very attractive dustwrapper which is lightly rubbed and nicked to the spine tips and with a thin blue ink mark to the rear panel. Not price-clipped. Signed by Elizabeth David in blue ink on the half title. Any of Elizabeth David's first editions are rare in signed state, this being a particularly nice example. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Synopsis

It is difficult to think of any home that can do without Elizabeth David's FRENCH PROVINCIAL COOKING...One could cook for a lifetime on the book alone' - Observer Elizabeth David succeeds in inducing a desire to use each recipe as soon as it is read. Whether she is describing the preparation of a plain green salad, or the marinading of a haunch of wild boar, she writes with the same imaginative directness. Recipes like 'pot au feu' are described in all their delicious simplicity, which, it is made clear, means cooking without elaboration and has nothing to do with the higgledy piggledy 'let's hope it's all right' technique. Some excellent advice is included on the choice of the tools that would always be needed in any kitchen.
