About This Item

Franklin Center, Pennsylvania: The Franklin Library. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1977. Leather. A deluxe leatherbound Franklin Library edition presenting the influential 1920 work by historian Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932). In this study, Turner expanded the earlier concept of "Manifest Destiny" with his "Frontier Thesis." With a preface by the author and illustrations by Phero Thomas. An entry in the publisher's 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature series, issued in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the American Revolution. One of an unspecified number in a limited edition. Franklin Library "Notes from the Editors" booklet about this work is included. --- Bound in full brown "cowhide" bonded leather covers made to look like sun-bleached saddle leather, with four raised bands on spine. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Interior leaves printed on high-quality papers. Brown silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Volume lacks a dust jacket (as issued). --- An about-Near Fine copy: bright, tightly-bound and probably unread, though with a little sunning to spine (which could be the intent of the binder to achieve the weathered saddle leather look).; Tall Octavo - 9 to 10 in. tall; xiii, 364 pages .
