About This Item

New York: American Tract Society, 1852. Third Edition. Good +. 12mo, pp. 231, full black leather binding, t.e.g. Blank leaves interleaved throughout the text. -- This copy has the blank leaves 9-110 with hand written translation of the printed text in brown ink; Interleaved pages 111-231 are blank. According to the preface; "A few copies..... will be interleaved with writing paper, on which each can note for himself the matter of every hymn, after having studied it with a competent interpreter...." [See complete quote below in comments]. -- First free endpaper name in ink "Mrs. Florence Hassler... Fort Belvoir, VA". -- First 50 or so pages have signatures pulled (no loose pages). -- Overall Condition. Preface (Page 7): English on opposite pages would have added greatly to the expense of the work; but a few copies for those who conduct the Sabbath services will be interleaved with writing paper, on which each can note for himself the matter of every hymn, after having studied it with a competent interpreter, as he must necessarily do, in order to read it himself, or to have his interpreter read it intelligibly to the congregation. By pursuing this course, he may become in a short time so familiar with the book, as to make his selections as readily as if it were in his own native tongue.
