Gronvold & 9 b/w. photographic plates taken by Mr. D. Seth-Smith. Edward Charles Stuart Baker was a British ornithologist and police officer & one of the most eminent exponents of Indian ornithology. After being educated at Trinity College he entered the Indian Police Force in 1883, rising to the rank of Inspector-General. He spent most of his service in Assam, which provided him with the great opportunity of observing the wild life. He lost his left arm to a panther (in Silchar, Assam), was tossed by a gaur (Indian bison) and trampled by an Indian rhinoceros during various hunting expeditions..
