London: Printed by Charles Rivington, 1757. Leather bound. Very good. The Eleventh Edition, Adapted to the New Style", octavo size, 381 pp. English botanist Philip Miller (1691-1771), who was chief gardener of Chelsea Physic Garden in London, England, for nearly fifty years, wrote this book to encompass a variety of advice pertaining to gardening and botany. In this volume, Miller details the care of a plethora of plants for each month of the year, especially with regards to plants and vegetables for eating; a thorough and fascinating read full of information and the history of the garden.
___DESCRIPTION: Full brown leather, the spine with five raised bands and gilt rules, brown leather spine label with gilt ruled borders and lettering, blind-embossed diagonal lines along the edges of the boards, black-and-white engraved frontispiece, floral initial capitals at the beginning of each chapter; octavo size (8" by 5"), pagination: [i-v] vi-xvii [1] 2-352 [353-364]. Armorial bookplate with the name "John Carre Esq of Nisbet" on the front paste-down endpaper.
___CONDITION: Volume is very good, with a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the bookplate mentioned above, the only prior owner markings we see are a private library number along with a pencilled number on the front pastedown; boards are clean overall with light soiling, some rubbing to the joints, the head and tail of the spine, the corners, and the edges of the boards, corners are gently bumped, hinges are starting but the boards and text block are all solid, some soiling to the endpapers and first and last flyleaves, light toning to some of the interior pages, and some rippling to the interior pages, likely due to the binding, as there is no sign of dampstaining.
