A Genealogical History of the Kings and Queens of England, and Monarchs of Great Britain &c. From the Conquest, Anno 1066, to the Year 1707

by Francis Sandford, Samuel Stebbing

Condition: Good/N

London : M Fenour, for John Nicholson; and Robert Knaplock, 1707 A good copy of the 2nd enlarged edition in contemporary full leather binding with 5 double page plates, 70 full page engravings and 2 double page genealogical tables. This edition was brought up to date by Samuel Stebbing, who added material for the years from 1677 to 1707, to Sandford's substantial work begun when he was Lancaster Herald of Arms in Charles II's reign. The quality of the work - from the material, to the paper, to the illustration - is very high, with some of the paper resembling light card. This copy was owned by Henry, Duke of Kent (1671-1740); Thomas Philip de Grey (2nd Earl of Grey - known as Lord Grantham - 1781-1859), and the Drummond Clan. There are armorial bookplates for all three on the front pastedown and fep - the Drummond plate with the motto 'Gang Warily'. The contemporary full leather binding is complete, but the spine joints have worn and there is wear to corners, with leather loss, and some damage to the title label on the spine, which has raised bands and elaborate gilt decoration. There is a gilt border to the boards. The page edges are lightly speckled. The endpapers are marbled with repair (failed) to the front endpapers; and the verso's and 2 initial and final blanks have spotting. The second initial blank has some creasing and repair. This copy has been priced to take account of the cost of binding repair. Internally, the contents are in very good condition. With title page in red and black; dedication 2pp; To the Reader 2pp; subscribers list 2pp; half title to Book I; text with illustrations in text, including headpieces, and full page and genealogical tables 878pp. Structured in 7 books with half titles for each present.Index 26pp and errata 1p. There is a little damp staining in the gutter p1-9; the ring mark from a small ?coffee can at the bottom of p263/4; a small paper flaw at p357; loss to the corner tip p371; small worm damage at the bottom edge of pp 453-64; light staining to edges of the index; a little light spotting to the plate at p597; and occasional ?soot specks in gutter of folding plates. Overall the text and engravings are bright, crisp and unmarked.
