Timber Press/Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Portland, Oregon, 1985. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/As New. Illustrator: Christabel King. The definitive botanical and cultural guide illustrated with 12 botanical paintings, 30 sets of line drawings and 6 distribution maps; This comprehensive account of the- horticulturally popular cactus genus includes a full taxonomic revision with a key to and descriptions of the 44 accepted species (plus 56 varieties), 14 illustrated in 12 water color plates, sets of line drawings of 33 species and 6 distribution maps. Extensive notes on cultivation and propagation are provided, based on expert advice. Like other large and popular cactus genera in cultivation, the identification and correct naming of Echinocereus specimens presents a serious problem for both amateur growers and professional botanists. Extant literature is either too out-of-date, incomplete, or rather inept, with many misidentifications and much misleading information. This book, the first comprehensive treatment of this group, presents the results of more than two years full time study by the author. Top amateur and professional growers have assisted in writing the notes on cultivation and in the provision of documented living material for study and illustration. In addition to detailing the history of the genus, full cultural information is given with regard to general requirements: i.e., light, water, composts, heating, etc; pests and diseases and their prevention/cure; propagation, including cuttings, seed-raising, grafting; requirements according to the seasons; sources of plants. The taxonomy of the genus has been subjected to exhaustive research, dealing with: THE SYSTEMATIC POSITION OF THE GENUS within the Cactus Family. INFRAGENERIC CLASSIFICATION: history, and characters now considered important; geography of the sections and groups; work that is still required to improve our understanding. KEY TO SPECIES (including all 44 naturally occurring species, but not hybrids). This is the first USA edition. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 160 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket is in 'as new' condition. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. illustrated by colour & b/w. drawings & maps.
