He accompanied Vitus Bering on the Second Kamchatka Expedition (ca.1740), sailed with Bering across the straits to land at Kayak, Alaska in 1741. Steller became the first European naturalist to describe many North American plants and animals, including several species that bear his name, such as Steller's sea cow.
