Tissue protected engraved frontispieces in each volume, seven other plates and two page plate facsimile of George Eliot's handwriting from "Notes on 'The Spanish Gypsy.'" Compiled by the husband of Eliot and considered a standard reference with material taken from personal papers, letters and other critical sources. Harper & Brothers Library Edition. Green pebbled cloth binding with gilt facsimile signatures on front covers, gilt titles, brown end papers. Light edge wear to covers, minor scrubbing and spotting, corners and spine ends a little bumped and slightly frayed, former owner's names, dates and a calling card cut in on blank pages of Vol. 1 & 3, page edges darkened and a little wormed on top edge, interior pages very lightly tanned with a little spotting.
