New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1900. Memorial edition. Limited edition number 958 (out of 1,250 copies printed, a rare item.) Marbelized boards with blue leather corners and spine trimmed in two rows of gilt along all three marlbelized edges. Boards have wear, corners are bumped and worn. Spine on volume 1 is missing a quarter inch piece at bottom. Spines are decorated with gilt illustrations and titles and have slightly raised bands. Gilt tops are dull. End papers are a lovely lavender floral probably oil and slightly discolored. Volume 1 endpaper has a chip (it is present, but detached.) Book sellers pencilled notations on fep. 302 heavy weight pages to volume one with black and white engravings and color frontispiece; very small spot to the blank back of frontispiece. The paper stock is a heavy weight, probably 24 pound cream colored paper with slightly embossed margins on every page. Engravings are printed on a light card stock, each covered with tissue. The quality is remarkable. Volume 2 is missing a quarter inch section at top and bottom of spine and has a light split about three quarters of the way down front exterior seam. Small spot worn from blue leather. Corners are worn. The frontispiece in this volume (Martha Washington) is detached three quarters of the way down from the top. Page 299 has a crease towards the bottom, a publishing defect. 308 pages including index. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
