Christianity was first introduced into Georgia by Andrew, Simon Cananaean and Matthew in the 1st century. But during the three centuries the expansion of Christianity in the country was prevented by the Pagan religion. And in the 4th century after the entry of St. Nino Georgia was converted to Christianity. Icons were the most available and populr aids in spreading and establishing the Christian religion. But they do not only belong to the church and its history. They also form one of the substantial components of medieval art. And as there is no history of medieval architecture without the Christian churches and other buildings of religious purpose, there can be no full picture of painting and sculpture without the icons of that period. Georgian masters, painters of icons and goldsmiths created numerous highly artistic works and made a valuable contribution in development of Christian culture. The present edition is wholly dedicated to Georgian Icons. This is more or less a full collection of embossed specimens by Georgian masters. Study of the repousse icons preserved in Georgia is very important for the history of medieval art not of Georgia alone, but also of other Christian countries.
