About This Item

1642 Dutch Vossius SYMBOLS Apostolic Athenasian Constantinople RARE Talon Family

Gerardus Vossius was a 16th-century Dutch classical theologian known for being one of the first to treat theological dogmas and non-Christian religions from a historical point of view, rather than the more accepted theological. His works of rhetoric were widely popular and were used as textbooks during and after his lifetime. He followed Aristotelian thought and was influenced not only by Aristotle, but also by Cicero and other ancient philosophers.

This 1642 edition of the works of Vossii was published by Blaeu and includes one of this most important works: "Three Dissertations on Symbols – Apostolic, Athenasian, Constantinople".

Amsterdami : Apud Iohannem Blaeu, 1642

Details:

· Collation: Complete with all pages

o [8], 93, [13]

· Provenance: Armorial bookplate

o This coat of arms bears many resemblances to that of the Talon family (the chevron, with 3 ears of corn/wheat supported by rising crescents). The family is remembered for being venerated jurists as well as noted bibliophiles, with a library composed predominantly of works on jurisprudence and philosophy. This particular bookplate might belong to Denis Talon (1628–1698), a French jurist who had a large part in the drafting of the Louis XIV Ordinances. At his death, he was the président à mortier of Paris, which was one of the most important legal posts of the French Ancien Régime. The présidents were principal magistrates of the highest juridical institutions, the parlements (i.e., the appeal courts).
