Karl Baedeker. Leipzig. George Allen & Unwin. London. Chas. Scribner's Sons. New York. 1936. Octavo. lxiv, 528pp. All maps and plans pristine, (Munchen I placed a little proud with extreme edge darkened). Rear pocket holding the road map and the Reichssportfeld Plan, both pristine. Original darker smooth variant cloth (issued in conjunction with the Berlin Olympics). A little shelf wear, bumped corners. Two small spots to upper board. Publisher's adverts to feps., map to reps. All edges marbled. Woven bookmark.

The first and only English edition to describe Germany under the Nazi regime. The 1936 Olympics in Berlin provided Hitler with a showcase for his political beliefs in Aryan supremacy and nationalism. The Berlin Olympics were the first ever to be televised, and to host the torch relay. The Plan included here is uncommon, and was not included with the post-Olympics issues of this edition.

"Many Jewish athletes who either competed in the Olympics prior to 1936 or the 1936 Olympics itself would die in concentration camps during the Holocaust." [Time Magazine]

This edition notably includes the entry for the National Socialist Party, its structure and its leaders, its symbols and its salute, the 'Deutscher Gruss or Hitler-Gruss', "ie the raising of the right arm, accompanied by the words 'Heil Hitler' has since 1933 largely superseded the practice of hat raising… compulsory for officials and for everybody when the national anthems are played".
