About This Item
Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1993. 1st edition / 1st printing. As New. octavo. dust jacket xix + 507pp., b/w plates, text ills., maps & plans, notes, appends., bibliog., index, Pfanz provides detailed tactical accounts of each stage of the fighting and explores the interactions between, and decisions made by, generals on both sides. He suggests that Union blunders nearly resulted in a victory for Confederate lieutenant general Richard S. Ewell on 2 July, although defeat came the next morning at the hands of Union troops fighting behind breastworks at Culp's Hill. Also explores the Confederate occupation of the town of Gettysburg, the skirmishing in the south end of the town and in front of the hills, and the small but decisive fight between Union cavalry and the Stonewall Brigade. Signed by Harry W. Pfanz on his bookplate on the free front end paper
