New York: Machmadim Art Editions, Inc, 1946. Hardcover. Very Good. Walkowitz, Abraham. Quarto size, 63 pp., inscribed by Abraham Walkowitz, entirely in Hebrew. Abraham Walkowitz (1878-1965) was a figure immersed in the American Modernist movement, best known for his series of drawings of the dancer Isadora Duncan; "Ghetto Motifs" is a collection of portraits rendered in pencil and pen-and-ink, ranging from everyday activities to the deeply religious and ritualistic. Walkowitz's drawings convey a uniquely Jewish experience, and his gentle depictions of various people exhibit an honesty mingled with individual aesthetic style. The book is accompanied by an essay by Isaac Lichtenstein, examining Walkowitz's career and artistic sensibilities, as well as his influences and his own impact within the Modernist movement. ___DESCRIPTION: Full red cloth, yellow lettering on the front board, title page in red and black, forty-nine black-and-white plates of Walkowitz's illustrations; quarto size (10.75" by 8"), pagination: [4] [i-vii [viii] [1-51], inscibed by Abraham Walkowitz on the front free endpaper "to Donald Kahn / from / Abraham Walkowitz". Please note the text is in Hebrew and the book reads right-to-left. With an essay by Isaac Lichtenstein laid in, a softcover pamphlet with seven pages and two staples at the spine, signed by Abraham Walkowitz on the front cover. ___CONDITION: Volume is very good, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; boards are clean overall with some slight soiling, some rubbing to the corners and to the head and tail of the spine, corners are gently bumped, spine is lightly sunned, some rubbing to the cloth at the front joint, and light toning to the top edges of the interior pages. The softcover pamphlet is very good, clean overall with some light spots of soiling, toning to the edges, light wear to the fore-edge, and some off-setting from the staples at the gutters. ___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
