Paris 1894-1896 . Three complete years bound together The front cover of each issue is a full-page coloured drawing of a scene illustrating the short story inside and the back page gives the words and music of a contemporary popular song , The stories illustrated are almost all on a blatantly sexual theme often involving bad behavious and loose morals. For the first ten years almost all the illustrations were by Theophile Steinlen,, the artist who withToulouse Lautrec most famously captures the mood of the l890s in Paris - the gaity of the night life and the boulveards contrasted with the pathos of the exploited shp-girls and laundresses. Steinlens sympathetic drawings of women are particularly fine. The journal is note-worthy for the restricted use of colours in the illustations, the earlier years mainly in red, black and blue, and from l894 a wider, livelier spectrum . These three years are bound together in red half calf in nice conditin) .
