About This Item
London: Frederick Warne, 1909. A fine first edition copy in an original printed glassine dust jacket. Pp. 51, [1]; color frontispiece and nine full-page color illustrations; b/w vignette to the title-page and nineteen further black and white vignettes in the text. Original tan boards blocked in green with a colour onlay to the front board. Colour pictorial endpapers (Jane Quinby: Beatrix Potter A Bibliographical Check-List -plates VIII and IX). The original glassine jacket is slightly later (ca. 1912), printed in black, with an advertisement for "The Peter Rabbit Books" on the rear panel "The Most Successful Children's BooksRecently Published" appended to which is "The Tale of Mr. Tod" and "The Tale of Pigling Bland" (which were published in 1912 & 1913 respectively); the rear flap lists "Picture Books for Children" Illustrated by L Leslie Brooke"; the front flap advertises "Charming New Editions of Miss Potters's Little Folding Pocket Book Series" (see illustrations). The jacket is good only, a fairly large piece is missing from the front panel, but this appears to have been blank, and extends on to the lower edge of the front flap, with very slight loss of text; the rear panel and flap are complete, a little chipping and some tears to the spine, neverthess it is remarkable that such a fragile production has survived at all. The book is in near fine to fine condition, minimal wear to the boards and spine, having been protected by the jacket; contents clean and tight; slight foxing to the half-title page and reverse of the frontispiece plate, and the odd isolated light spot to a further one or two pages, otherwise unmarked and without inscriptions. A near fine first edition copy in a good original printed glassing jacket.. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Good. Small 4to (14 x 18cm). Book.
