Presumed first American ed.--1892 is on t.p. but copyright page gives no indication of a printing; 193 p., plus 16 p. of charming illustrated book ads, unmarked anywhere (no inscription or name of former owner or seller) and only one smudge--on p. 5 which is where the first sewn signature begins to detach from text block; frontis. with tissue guard is among beautiful b&w ill. by Reginald Birch; paper strong and only mildly age-toned; binding firm over all and volume unbowed; faintly smudged front board features stamped putto amid gilt vines with purple leaves and black lettering; spine is sunned and lettering there effaced; corners bumped; slight rubbing at crown and foot of spine.
