London: Barn Elms, 1996. Very well illustrated, large horizontal quarto, pp 135, a very good copy in dustwrapper. Very well illustrated, large horizontal quarto, pp 135, a very good copy in dustwrapper. [Landscape historian Batey explores real and fictional settings of Austen's novels. In each chapter she uses a different Austen novel to discuss the style of gardens and landscapes during the early 19th century and Regency England. A continuing theme is the tension between Georgian propriety and the challenging Romantic ideals as they played out in the English landscape. Jane Austen was deeply inspired by the landscape and rural comforts of southern England. Her family's final move to Chawton, in the depths of the Hampshire countryside and so near the Steventon rectory of her childhood, gave her great satisfaction and led to her most creative period. This comprehensive work provides a guide to the ideas and subtleties behind the real and fictional settings of Jane Austen's novels, with…

Thick 12mo, (measures 95mm x 149mm binding size), pp (30), 433,(i), (corrigenda page),(i), second title page, (32), 271, some age-toning, the first title page a little soiled and with slight tears, a tiny contemporary signature on the title page (possibly Jas Brown ?), very smartly bound in a modern full calf, lightly blind-stamped, new endpapers. The binding is a little tight, so the inner margins are slightly awkward to read. [Hierocles of Alexandria was a Greek Neoplatonist writer who was active around AD 430. The only complete work of his which has been preserved is this commentary on the Golden Verses of Pythagoras. It enjoyed a great reputation in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and there are numerous translations in various European languages. Several other writings, especially one on providence and fate, a consolatory treatise dedicated to his patron Olympiodorus of Thebes, are quoted or referred…
