Description:
Edinburgh: Printed for William Blackwood, Prince's Street; and John Murray, Bookseller of the Admiralty and Board of Longit,, 1817. Scarce First Edition. This is an ex-library of the copy from the Literary And Philosophical Society in Newcastle. In brown / green cloth hardback boards. Complete; including frontis folding chart entitled "Exhibiting the Variation of the Compass agreeable to the position of the Ships Head at the time of Observation. Also the track of His Majestys Ships Sybille & Princess Carolina in a Cruize to East Greenland in 1814." Boards are darkened, and have some very small spots of soiling. Fold-out has small tear to very edges. Unfortunately, aside from the expected library stamps at the front and on verso of fold-out, the book has some damage from damp. Several of the pages have obviously stuck together at some point, and been forcibly opened, leading to loss of text. Most of the tables are still in a good condition, but towards the back the condition is worse. Only in a fair… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by T. Bensley, for E. and S. Harding, 1797. Hardback, covered in marbled paper covers with leather label to the spine. The preface is dated March 1796, and the pagination conforms to the first edition, but the date to the title page has been very neatly cut out. We are a little confused by this copy. The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge of the spine a little chipped, exposing the paper beneath. Still attractive though. A few light foxing spots, but the engravings are good clean impressions. The first section is of 'Elfin Eclogues', featuring characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing odes on various subjects, including: 'Music', 'Morning', 'Evening',… Read More

Paris: Librairie Bachelin-Deflorenne, 1875. First Edition, with contemporary annotations showing prices achieved. A paper label shows that this copy was for Monsieur Pavet, and that he was to received a volume bound in half red leather and with papier Agathe (which this copy is). The majority of the catalogues were softback, so Monsieur Pavet must have been a valued customer. American citizen, the owner of this collection, Mr. Benzon, ran the house of Naylor, Benzon & Cie in London. He died two years before his library went on sale. Many of the books he purchased were from the Henry Bordes collection, who wrote catalogue entries for much of this sale (signified by his initials after the entry). The sale comprised 400 items, and against each, is the price achieved (in pencil) Red half calf with gilt titles. Brown marbled boards. A little rubbing and dulling to the spine and edges, with a touch of loss to the corners of the boards. Internally in very good condition, with a little darkening and a few… Read More
