This book covers the early archaeological discoveries of the trailblazers who discovered Troy, Mycaenae, the Egyptian Pharaohs, Babylon and the Assyrians, and the early South American civilisations. What is so surprising was what an easy read it was, capturing the excitment of all these discoveries as if from the eyes of the explorers themselves. It reads like an adventure story, and once I started, I couldn't put it down. This will be a Christmas present for friends, because even if you are not into archaeology, this is a fascinating and wonderful book. My favourite book in a long time.
