This is the Advance Reader's Edition/Uncorrected Proof of the first novel in the His Dark Materials trilogy, first published in the U.K. as His Dark Materials 1: Northern Lights. This is an interesting edition as the number line on the copyright page starts with 2 and ends with 10 and has no first printing statement (the hardcover edition has the number line start with 10 and descend to 1 and states first printing. The pagination between the proof and the hardcover is also different, the first text page is 3 ending with 397, the hardcover edition has the text start with page 3 and end with 399. Synopsis
Northern Lights, known as The Golden Compass in North America, is the first novel in English novelist Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Published in 1995, the fantasy novel is set in a universe parallel to our own and tells of Lyra Belacqua's journey north in search of her missing friend, Roger Parslow, and her imprisoned father/uncle, Lord Asriel, who has been conducting experiments with a mysterious substance known as Dust.
