Boston: Phillips, Sampson & Company, 1850. Edition not stated. Octavo (20cm); black morocco, elaborately stamped in gilt; AEG; 7-252pp. Book is amateurishly rebacked, with remnants of original spine adhered to a new layer of black backing material, and new preliminaries. Boards soiled, scratched and rubbed, with moderate wear to extremities. Original contents thoroughly foxed, but tight and sound. A Good overall copy.
An example of the literary annual, or "gift book" genre that was so popular in this era, particularly with young ladies. These books were often festooned with many decorative touches, such as gilt covers and steel plate engravings. While many literary annuals featured contributions from very well-known (and very well-paid authors), curiously none of the poems or short stories appearing in this edition of The Golden Gift are attributed. An illuminated half-title page and copyright page mark the publication date as 1849, while the full title page specifies 1850. FAXON 351.
