About This Item

New York: D. Appleton-Century Co., 1936. vi, 184, [1] pages, plus color frontispiece. Near fine in like dust jacket. Corners of book and jacket bumped; jacket a little worn at ends of spine panel and with a tiny tear at head of rear panel and a minuscule chip to upper corner of front panel; still a nice, bright copy. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the verso of the frontispiece. It reads: "To Eleanor Schoberlin -- This, the oldest love tale that has come down to us in our Western literatures (for of Troy's Helen we know only the name, of her love-story nothing) a tale burning with the sun of the desert Mâqedâ crossed to find the King of her Heart, before the oldest tomb was hewn in rose-red Petra. Post Wheeler." Eleanor Jeffrey Schoberlin corresponded with a number of contemporary writers and was married to Melvin Harold Schoberlin (1912-1977), a noted Stephen Crane scholar and collector. George Post Wheeler (1869-1956) was an American diplomat who served his country in embassies around the world from 1906 to 1934. He was also the author of a number of books, including several other works on world folklore.
