About This Item
New York: Lippincott, 1960 Augusta Braxton Baker was "a lioness of children's literature" according to Wikipedia. She made a point of selecting these folktales from around the world to reintroduce because the books they were in were out-of-print and she wanted them to be more accessible. You will note her title at the end of the introduction: Storytelling and Group Work Specialist, The New York Public Library. She was the first African-American hired in administration at the New York Public Library, and set to work to find children's books which presented black people in a more favourable light. She is big in the storytelling literature. The book in question is a Lippincott Longlife Binding. No library markings. There are two marks on front end paper which may have been left by a bookplate. Terrific cover and some black and white illustrations by Joh. Troyer. This is a 4th printing of the 1960 editiion, Rubbing to corners but still attractive, square and sturdy.
