Toronto: Macmillan, 1950. Book. Illus. by Bice, Clare. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). First Printing of the First Edition. Very good with wear to extremities, and minor soil. The jacket is edgeworn, with 3 large chips, and tape repairs to long tears. One of these is external, along the back fold at spine. ( see photos ) this remains a presentable copy of an increasingly elusive title. Scarce in any condition. Rare thus..

Description:
[Middletown, CT]: Art Laboratory Wesleyan University, 1966.. Small quarto. Cloth and paper over boards, printed label. Narrow loss from left corner of cover label, touching the 'T', a couple of minor rubs, otherwise about fine. First edition in book form. One of thirty copies only, set and printed by hand in Bembo types as a class undertaking: "... printed by the hands of the following on a Washington press, Karl Furstenburg, Alan Thorndike, Bruce Hartman, Wendy Cowie, Kristine Blum, James Patrick, Jeri Cantliffe, James Ruby." This copy (#5) bears Paul Horgan's affectionate year-of- printing presentation inscription to two close Middletown friends and collaborators. One of the multi-Pulitzer Prize winning author's scarcest publications, even within geographical proximity of its origin. OCLC locates five copies: Yale, Newberry, Swarthmore, SMU, and BM Lyon. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, 1979. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Inscribed first edition of this 1979 collection of essays, mesostics, and other procedurally generated writings by the avant-garde American composer. The title work is a text-score in which chance operations are used to systematically deconstruct the journals of Henry David Thoreau--a tactic born of Cage's interest in "demilitarizing" language by making it less understandable. Other pieces include a long anecdotal poem relating to Cage's macrobiotic diet, and the "The Future of Music," which was essentially the last of Cage's nonfiction works written in a traditional essay format. Quarto (8.25 x 9.5 in.); ix, 187pp.; black cloth boards, white spine titles, in dust jacket. Neatly signed and inscribed ("For Jo") by Cage, in red felt-tip pen, on the half-title page. Light foxing to edges of textblock and sporadically to interior; boards lightly shelfworn; mild musty… Read More
