Denver; (1961): Sage Books. 235p. This is a book about lost mines and hidden treasures in the San Juan region. There are seventeen stories and forty-four illustrations, mostly photographs and maps. Cornelius was one of the old timers who knew those who were there when gold was discovered in 1860. He remembered the accounts of the Indians, Mexicans, miners and the harsh penalties of the miners courts and vigilance committees. Much of what was called "lost treasure" was, in fact, stolen treasure. The photographs here help show the difficult terrain where gold made a few men rich leaving others with vast disappointments. From Turkey Head, Molas Lake, Engineer Mountain to the place where the Baker Brothers seam existed these photographs show areas not shown in previous books. In the one of the Needle Mountains, the ear of Cornelius' burro's shows the Carson Mine. Bound beige paper covered boards lettered in dark brown, just a hint of toning to edges in unclipped pictorial dust jacket rubbed with some fading to spine.
